A High Court in Accra has directed Mona Gucci to pay ¢500,000 as damages in a defamation case filed by award winning actress Yvonne Nelson.
Mona is a well known socialite and presenter in Accra. It can be recalled in May 2020 Mona made a defamatory publication on Accra-based Neat Fm in an interview against Yvonne .
Yvonne’s counsel wrote to Mona to retract her statement and apologize to Yvonne Nelson. However, Mona decided to make the already complicated issue murkier by going on social media to rant. She further urged Yvonne to go to court if she wants to be disgraced the more.
Yvonne’s primary concern was how she was included in a tall list of female celebrities labeled as “Slay Queens” which describes them as women who legally engage in prostitution to sustain their flashy lifestyles. On many fronts, this seeks to discredit the efforts the actress has put in to get to this stage in life and also for the recognition she has as an award winning actress.
Mona was absent from the court presided over by Justice John Eugene Nyante Nyandu but that did not prevent her from escaping her judgment.
Mona has been directed to refrain from making further defamatory comments about actress Yvonne Nelson and also pay the fine of ¢500,000.
This comes a wake up call to presenters in the media space who find means to make headlines for saying “anything” on air when they have the opportunity.
